Wi-Fi Speed Guide / Calculator

See the share of Wi-Fi each active device is likely to get.

Enter your plan and active devices.

How much Wi-Fi speed does each device get?

Wi-Fi is shared. Every active device takes a slice of the router's airtime, and wireless overhead means you never get the full plan speed. This calculator estimates the share per device.

The formula

Speed per device = plan speed × efficiency ÷ active devices. Efficiency of about 70% is a reasonable default for a healthy connection; walls, distance and interference can push it lower.

Example

A 200 Mbps plan at 70% efficiency gives 140 Mbps of usable Wi-Fi. Shared between five active devices, that is roughly 28 Mbps each.

Practical fixes

  • Place the router high and central, away from thick walls and appliances.
  • Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz for nearby devices and 2.4 GHz for range.
  • Move fixed, demanding devices such as consoles and desktops onto Ethernet.
  • Add a mesh node or access point when one router cannot cover the home.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Wi-Fi Speed Guide / Calculator

Why is my Wi-Fi slower than my plan?

Wireless overhead, distance, walls and interference reduce speed, and every active device shares what is left.

What Wi-Fi efficiency should I use?

Around 70% is a sensible starting point. Use 40–50% for a weak signal and 80% or higher close to the router.

Does 5 GHz give faster Wi-Fi than 2.4 GHz?

Usually yes at short range, but 2.4 GHz travels further through walls.
