What is a download time calculator?
It estimates how long a file will take to download, given its size and your connection speed. Use it before starting a large game install, an operating-system update or a cloud restore so you can plan around the wait.
The formula
Time (seconds) = file size in bytes × 8 ÷ speed in bits per second. The calculator converts the units for you and shows the answer in seconds, minutes, hours or days.
Example
A 5 GB file at 100 Mbps takes 5,000,000,000 × 8 ÷ 100,000,000 = 400 seconds, about 6.7 minutes. A 50 GB game at the same speed takes roughly 67 minutes.
Why real downloads take longer
The result is the ideal time. Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi conditions, server limits and other devices sharing the line normally add some extra minutes, so leave a margin for large downloads.

How long does it take to download 1 GB at 50 Mbps?
1 GB is 8,000 megabits, so at 50 Mbps it takes 160 seconds – a little under three minutes in ideal conditions.
Why is my download slower than the estimate?
Overhead, Wi-Fi, server speed and network sharing reduce real throughput. Treat the estimate as a best case.
Does this work for uploads too?
