Network Speed & Connection Guide
A short checklist for finding out why a connection is slow or unstable.
How do I find out why my internet is slow?
Work through the connection in layers rather than restarting everything at random. The four checks above narrow the problem to your device, your Wi-Fi, your router or your provider.
A simple troubleshooting order
- Compare wired and wireless. If Ethernet is fast and Wi-Fi is slow, the router position, interference or equipment is the limit.
- Check more than download speed. Ping, jitter and packet loss decide whether calls and games feel responsive.
- Test at a quiet time. Slow results at every hour point to the modem or provider; a dip only in the evening suggests congestion.
- Restart with a purpose. Reboot the modem and router, then test again from the same spot so the comparison means something.
Use the calculators together
Start with the Internet Speed Calculator, use the Bandwidth Calculator for household demand and the Wi-Fi Speed Calculator if coverage is the issue. The full connection guide explains the terms in more depth.
Frequently asked questions about the Network Speed & Connection Guide
Why is my internet slow only in the evening?
Shared local networks are busiest in the evening. If speeds recover late at night, congestion is a likely cause.
Should I restart my router?
A restart can clear temporary faults. Test from the same place before and after so you can tell whether it helped.
When should I contact my provider?
If a wired test on a quiet network stays well below your plan speed at all hours, contact them with your results.
