Do you store the numbers I enter?
No. Calculations run in your own browser, so the values you type are not sent to our server or saved. The site only keeps a simple count of page views.
What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbps means megabits per second and is the unit internet plans use. MB/s means megabytes per second and is what file downloads usually show. One byte is eight bits, so divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s: a 100 Mbps plan downloads at about 12.5 MB/s.
What internet speed do I need?
It depends on what happens at the same time. Roughly 5 Mbps for each HD stream, 25 Mbps for each 4K stream and 3 Mbps for each video call. Add the activities together, multiply by the number of people and keep about 25% spare. The Internet Speed Requirement Calculator does this for you.
Why is my internet slower than the speed I pay for?
Plans are usually advertised as a maximum. Wi-Fi distance and interference, other devices, server limits, congestion at busy times and protocol overhead all reduce what you see. Test over a cable first to separate a Wi-Fi problem from a provider problem.
What is a good ping?
Under 30 ms is excellent, 31–60 ms is good, 61–120 ms is noticeable in fast games and calls, and above 120 ms usually feels laggy. Ping measures delay, not speed, so a fast plan can still have a high ping.
How accurate are the results?
The formulas are standard and shown on every tool page, but the results are planning estimates. Real performance depends on your equipment, wireless conditions, the server you connect to and network congestion, so leave a safety margin.
How much data does streaming use?
As a guide, about 0.7 GB per hour at standard definition, 3 GB per hour in HD and around 7 GB per hour in 4K. The Streaming Data Calculator turns that into a monthly figure from your own viewing habits.
