What is ping and what is a good ping?

Ping is the round-trip time, in milliseconds (ms), for a small signal to reach a server and come back. It measures delay, not speed. A lower number means actions feel more responsive.

How the tool rates your ping

  • 0–30 ms – excellent: ideal for competitive gaming and live calls.
  • 31–60 ms – good: fine for most live activity.
  • 61–120 ms – noticeable: delay may be felt in fast games and calls.
  • 121 ms and above – high: expect obvious lag.

What affects latency?

Distance to the server, Wi-Fi quality, congestion, the route your provider uses and what else is using your connection. Jitter (variation in ping) and packet loss can make a connection feel worse than its average ping suggests.

How to lower ping

Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, choose a closer game server, pause large downloads and restart the router if results are unusually high.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Ping & Latency Information Tool

What is a good ping for gaming?

Under 30 ms is excellent and under 60 ms is good for most games. Above 120 ms is usually noticeable.

Is ping the same as internet speed?

No. Speed is how much data moves per second; ping is the delay of a round trip.

What is jitter?

Jitter is how much ping varies from one moment to the next. High jitter causes stutter in calls and games even when average ping looks fine.
