What does the Internet Speed Calculator do?

The Internet Speed Calculator turns the three numbers from a speed test – download speed, upload speed and ping – into a plain-language verdict. Instead of guessing whether 40 Mbps is “good”, you see how the connection is likely to feel for streaming, video calls, downloads and gaming.

How is the result worked out?

Download speed decides how quickly data arrives, and the calculator rates it in bands: under 10 Mbps is limited under load, 10–25 Mbps suits light use, 25–100 Mbps is comfortable for everyday use and 100 Mbps or more copes with a busy household. Ping is judged separately because it measures delay, not capacity: 30 ms or less is low latency, up to 60 ms is reasonable, up to 120 ms is noticeable and anything higher is high.

Example

A result of 100 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up and 25 ms ping is rated excellent for a busy household with low latency. The same 100 Mbps with a 150 ms ping would still download quickly but feel sluggish in calls and games.

Tips for a fair reading

• Run the speed test on Ethernet first, then again over Wi-Fi in the room where you actually work.
• Test at more than one time of day; one busy-hour dip does not mean the plan is bad.
• Close streaming and cloud backups before testing so they do not use the line.
