Video Call Data Calculator
Budget data for camera-on meetings, classes or support calls.
How much data does a video call use?
Video calls use less data than 4K streaming but they run in both directions, and they run for hours if you work or study remotely. This calculator estimates the monthly total from call quality and weekly call time.
The formula
Monthly GB = quality rate (GB per hour) × hours per week × 4.345. The rates used are 0.45 GB per hour for standard quality, 1.2 GB for HD and 2.5 GB for group HD calls.
Example
Five hours of HD calls a week: 1.2 × 5 × 4.345 ≈ 26 GB per month.
What changes the number
Camera resolution, the number of visible participants, screen sharing and whether the platform reduces quality on a weak connection all change real usage. Turning your camera off is the quickest way to save data.
Frequently asked questions about the Video Call Data Calculator
How much data does a one-hour Zoom call use?
Roughly 0.5 GB at standard quality and 1–1.5 GB in HD, more in large group calls.
Do video calls need a fast upload speed?
Yes. You are sending video as well as receiving it, so a stable 3–5 Mbps upload is a comfortable target for HD calls.
How can I use less data on calls?
Turn off your camera when it is not needed, lower the video quality in settings or use audio only.
