Cost of Waiting Life Insurance Calculator

Pick how long you might delay and see the monthly increase and the extra cost across a 20 year policy.

Why delay is expensive

Life insurance prices rise with age because the chance of a claim rises with age. Waiting is also a gamble on your health, since a diagnosis that appears next year can raise your price or make cover unavailable. This calculator makes that cost visible by pricing the same policy today and after a delay you choose.

How it calculates

The tool prices a 20-year level term policy at your current age and at your age after the delay, then multiplies the difference by 240 months. The pricing model grows by roughly 6.7 percent for every year of age, so even small delays compound. It does not include health changes, which would make the true cost of waiting higher for many people.

Worked example

A 35-year-old wants $500,000 of 20-year cover. Today the estimate is $43 a month. After waiting until 40 it becomes $60, an increase of about 38.4 percent, and the extra cost across the policy is roughly $3,972. That is money paid for the same protection simply because the purchase was postponed.

Reasons people wait, and how to respond

  • "I'm healthy now." That is exactly when prices are lowest and approval is easiest.
  • "I can't afford it." A smaller amount or shorter term can fit most budgets.
  • "I'll buy after the next life event." Cover is easier to arrange before a baby or home purchase than during a busy period.
  • "My employer covers me." Work cover usually ends if you leave, and is often only one or two times salary.

The case for a smaller start

You do not have to buy the perfect policy today. Buying a modest policy now locks in your age and health class, and many insurers allow you to add cover later. Pair this tool with the Life Insurance Premium Estimator to test different amounts, and with the Life Insurance Needs Calculator to find a sensible target.
