What this estimator does
It gives a ballpark monthly price for a level term policy so you can budget before you talk to an insurer. It is a model, not a quote, but it moves the way real premiums move: sharply upward with age, much higher for tobacco users, slightly lower for women and higher for longer terms.
How the price is built
The model starts from a base rate per $1,000 of cover at age 25 and grows it by about 6.7 percent for every extra year of age. It then multiplies by 2.8 for tobacco use, 0.85 for women, and by 0.8, 1.0 or 1.3 for 10, 20 and 30 year terms. Multiply by your cover in thousands and you have the monthly figure.
Worked example
For a 35-year-old non-smoking man buying $500,000 over 20 years, the estimate is $43 a month. The same buyer with a 30-year term sees $56, and with a 10-year term $34. A tobacco user of the same age lands near $121, while a woman with otherwise identical details sees about $37.
What moves your price in real life
- Age at purchase: every year you wait raises the rate for the entire term.
- Health class: insurers use blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and family history to place you in a rate class.
- Tobacco and nicotine: usually needs 12 months or more of abstinence before non-smoker rates apply.
- Hobbies and travel: aviation, diving and extended foreign travel can add surcharges.
Using the estimate wisely
Use this figure to test affordability. A common guideline is to keep life insurance under about one to two percent of gross income, though your priorities may differ. If the estimate for your target cover is uncomfortable, shorten the term, reduce the amount or build a ladder of two smaller policies instead of one large one. The Life Insurance Needs Calculator helps you check whether a smaller amount still protects your family.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my real quote different?
Insurers price on medical exams, prescription history and underwriting rules that no simple model can see.
Do premiums rise during the term?
On a level term policy the premium is fixed for the whole term. It resets only if you renew after the term ends.
Is a longer term always better?
Not always. Match the term to your longest financial obligation, such as the mortgage or the years until children are independent.
